Unlikely Candidates -Disciples - Acts 1:12-26
By Daniel Savage on 12 May 2024 at Service in FAYAP and on Zoom with Communion
With a focus on three groups of disciples, Daniel addresses our feelings of being unqualified for various tasks in our lives.
1. The Twelve -they had deserted Jesus in His hour of need and Judas betrayed Him, yet Jesus restored those who turned back to him in shame, sadly just eleven of them.
2. Women -several are named as being in that room amongst the 120, which was unusual in society at that time. Jesus was revolutionary in his respect for women, e.g. the Samaritan woman, the one caught in adultery and the one who washed His feet with her hair. Women were the first to see the risen Christ! This reminds us that all are welcome into God’s kingdom.
3. Matthias -no previous reports of him in the gospels, he was unremarkable, which is encouraging to us. We need to respect everyone, not just the prominent people in church or society.
