Andrew begins with a detailed summary of Jacob’s life so far, showing how he has always ‘made things happen’ and grasped at things -his brother’s birthright, for one! His name even means ‘one who grasps’.
Andrew suggests that God was finding a way to show Jacob that he needed to do things in God’s strength and not his own, and after this event gave him a new name.
Do we wrestle with recurring patterns in our lives? Is God trying to say something to us about them? We should ‘wrestle’ with God until we work through each and are able to use His power to overcome them.
